Provisions for low-income households

If you live in a low-income household, you may qualify for the following provisions when submitting a Disaster Recovery Assistance for Ontarians application:

  • Your $500 assistance deductible will be waived.
  • You can apply for assistance for damage caused by a sewer backup, which is not otherwise eligible under the program.

Determining low-income threshold eligibility

To determine whether your household income falls below the program’s low-income threshold, add together the net income (as shown on line 236 of the Canada Revenue Agency notice of assessment) for each adult in the household. You must use the most recent notice of assessment available for each adult in the household.

Updated March 22, 2018

The program’s low-income thresholds are established each year based on 50 per cent of median after-tax (net income) household income, as reported by Statistics Canada, adjusted for the number of people living in the household.

Example

Three adults and two children live in Christine’s household. The net income of the three adults in the household as noted on line 236 of their 2016 Canada Revenue Agency notices of assessment are:

Name of adults Net income
Christine
$7,781
Robert $5,021
Alice $10,341
Total households net income $23,233
2017 thresholds for
a household with five people
$49,799

Using the information in income thresholds table, for a household with five people, a net household income in 2017 of $49,799 or lower qualifies for the program’s special low-income provisions. Christine’s net household income is $23,233, so she qualifies for the program’s special provisions for low-income households.
