Town of Espanola
Imagine, acres of pristine forest surrounded by fresh water lakes and the opportunity to work, live and play right outside your door. We invite you to discover the Town of Espanola and its gateway to growth.
The Town of Espanola, the northern gateway to Manitoulin Island, is located 75 kilometers (km) west of Sudbury and 2 km south of Hwy 17 on Hwy 6. Espanola is readily accessible by both road and rail and is situated on the Spanish River. Espanola was founded in 1899 as a result of an agreement between Ontario and the Spanish River Pulp and Paper Company. Its association with the pulp and paper industry continues today. Domtar Inc. is the largest employer in the community, and produces 75,000 tonnes of paper and 344,000 tonnes of pulp annually and provides close to 600 jobs.
Nestled in a beautiful part of northeastern Ontario is the dynamic community of Espanola. This strategically located town is only 45 minutes away from the City of Greater Sudbury and is situated in the heart of the LaCloche Foothills. It is just north of Manitoulin Island, near the north shore of Lake Huron.
With its close proximity to a large city and the affordable cost of housing, the Town of Espanola is an ideal location for new residents and businesses alike. This quaint community with a population of 5,500 has established itself as an excellent economic centre for training, business, retail, medical services, government, transportation and distribution. Espanola serves as a retail and service center for the North Shore Region, which includes a population of 25,000. It has an annual budget of $15.8 million. It is led by a 7 member municipal council headed by Mayor Bernie Gagnon.
With something for everyone, Espanola offers the most picturesque wilderness, lakes, fishing, camping, hiking and golfing opportunities. During the winter months, enjoy downhill and cross-country skiing, ice-skating and snowmobiling on one of our many groomed trails. The Espanola Regional Recreation Complex also offers a fully enclosed state-of-the-art recreation facility featuring a five-lane swimming pool, a sloped wading and splash pool, whirlpool and sauna. It houses an arena, a complete fitness centre and two squash courts. The Town of Espanola is also involved with the community in hosting various special events throughout the year, such as the Paper Festival, the Canada Day Celebrations, and the Winterlights Lighted Parade.
Espanola offers state of the art infrastructure that provides its citizens with a high quality of life. Recent upgrading and development of new infrastructure, including the sewage treatment plant, water tower, water treatment plant, a multi-purpose recreation complex, hospital, medical centre and seniors complex ensures that the community is ready to meet the economic and social development challenges of the 21st Century.
Espanola is implementing a Strategic Plan for Economic Development. The Town has a new corporate logo. The slogan is “A Fine Paper Town” and the goal is attracting 1000 people and 500 jobs in the next 8 to 10 years. A full time Economic Development Officer has been hired to assist in implementing projects, which include a new Industrial Park, signage and theming for the community, the BR+E project and a forestry interpretive centre.
