Making Places Matter
By linking the built environment to economic well being, municipalities are working to plan and design communities for people and businesses, in order to:
- produce long-term community benefits
- foster economies able to withstand global economic shifts and pressures
- facilitate municipal “destination” and “place of choice” goals
“The way we plan and design places has a significant impact on their social and economic fortunes. This is true in the regeneration of existing neighbourhoods and the development of new communities. Good urban design can help increase property values, reduce crime, contribute to public health and ease transport problems.”
The use of urban design codes, Introduction ▌Building Sustainable Communities, November 1, 2003 Commission for Architecture and the Built Environment (CABE)
This handbook is about:
- planning and financial tools that support placemaking efforts
- different approaches being used to learn, change and leverage local and regional assets to their greatest economic advantage
- a municipal checklist for use by municipalities of all sizes and types, to help determine how they might position themselves for economic development, competitiveness and resiliency
