3.2.5.13.(1) Sprinkler Protection in High Pile Storage of Flammable Liquids

COMMISSION RULING:

In favour of the Applicant.

Regarding Flammable Goods Warehouse, BASF Canada Inc., 10 Craig Street, Brantford, Ontario.

It is the decision of the Building Code Commission that this single storey 27,279 sq. ft. flammable liquids warehouse protected by an AFFF sprinkler system with storage up to 28 ft. shows sufficiency of compliance.

REASONS:

  1. The ceiling sprinkler density is double that required for rack storage of flammable liquids stored to a height of 25 ft. as per NFPA 30.

  2. The travel distance to an exist is 75 ft.

  3. There is a watchman on duty 24 hours a day at the guardhouse who makes hourly rounds.

  4. The sprinkler system is supervised to the fire department and the guardhouse.

  5. The plant operates 24 hours a day.

  6. The warehouse is divided into two sections by a parapetted 4 hr. fire separation with 3 hr. fire protection rated closures on all openings.

  7. The paid full-time fire department have the expertise to fight a fire at the warehouse and are equipped with AFFF.
