BUILDING CODE COMMISSION DECISION ON B.C.C. #94-04-382

IN THE MATTER OF BUT NOT LIMITED TO:

Ontario Building Code, O. Reg. 413/90

PART 3,

Sentence 3.3.1.9.(8)

Requirement for a dead end corridor serving an assembly occupancy.

COMMISSION RULING:

In favour of the APPLICANT.

Regarding the question concerning the dead end portion of a second storey public corridor, approximately 4.5 m long, providing access to exit from a proposed private school classroom served by only one egress door, located at 7077 Kennedy Road, Suite 208, Markham, Ontario.

It is the decision of the Building Code Commission that providing smoke detectors in the public corridor connected to the fire alarm annunciator panel provides sufficiency of compliance.

REASONS:

  1. The building is provided with a supervised sprinkler system.

  1. The smoke detectors will provide early warning of any fire condition in the public corridor.

  1. The occupant load will be limited to 19 people including 4 supervisory staff and the maximum occupant load will be posted.

  1. The travel distance from the suite door to the exit is not more than 3 metres.

Dated at Toronto this 22nd day in the month of February in the year 1994 for application number 1994-04.
