Our government believes that every Ontario family should have a safe, healthy, affordable place to call home. Access to affordable housing is key to reducing child poverty and developing a decent standard of living for all Ontarians.
The McGuinty government is planning to increase its investment in social and affordable housing to create short-term jobs in construction and renovation while improving the lives of people of low-income families.
In its recent Budget, the government proposed new housing infrastructure initiatives to support its Poverty Reduction Strategy.
Our government is investing $622 million to match the funding announced in the federal government’s 2009 budget – a combined $1.2 billion for housing.
The funding will create 23,000 jobs over the course of the program.
Our combined investment:
- $704 million to repair social housing units and make them more energy efficient;
- $365 million to create new affordable housing for low-income seniors and persons with disabilities; and
- $175 million to extend the Canada-Ontario Affordable Housing Program.
Program details are being developed. Housing providers and developers interested in participating in the program should contact their municipal housing department at:
