Province and Municipalities Launch Local Government Week
October 20, 2008
TORONTO
Local Government Week is being celebrated across Ontario from October 19 to 25, 2008.
Local Government Week will introduce Grades 5 and 10 students across the province to the world of municipal government – its leaders, the programs and services they provide, local decision-making, and career and volunteer opportunities in local public service.
Local Government Week is a project of the Association of Municipal Managers, Clerks and Treasurers of Ontario (AMCTO) supported by the Ministry of Municipal Affairs and Housing and the Association of Municipalities of Ontario (AMO).
The partners worked closely with the Ontario Teachers Federation and other education experts in developing the program.
QUOTES
“Local Government Week is an opportunity for our children and youth to learn more about the role local government plays in our daily lives,” said Municipal Affairs and Housing Minister Jim Watson.
“Teaching young people about responsible citizenship and the value of stewardship for their local communities are critical to the long-term vitality and prosperity of Ontario’s municipalities,” said AMCTO President Ray Callery. “We are pleased to partner with the Ministry of Municipal Affairs and Housing and AMO to bring Local Government Week to life and as a celebration of the key role that Ontario local governments play in defining the character, priorities, and physical make-up of our communities.”
“Local Government Week will engage tomorrow’s community leaders today,” said AMO President Peter Hume.
