Outlines Staff Recommendations on New Legislative Framework for City
News Release
November 14, 2005
TORONTO — The Government of Ontario and the City of Toronto today released a joint staff report that proposes a bold, new approach for empowering Canada’s largest city.
The final report of the Joint Ontario-City of Toronto Task Force to Review the City of Toronto Acts and Other Legislation outlines the consensus that staff from both levels of government reached on the proposed elements of new legislation.
The Ontario government will now review the report and will introduce a new City of Toronto Act in the Legislature by the end of 2005.
“The McGuinty government’s significant investments in transit, health and education contribute to Toronto’s role as the province’s economic engine,” said Municipal Affairs and Housing Minister John Gerretsen. “Our government is ready to see Toronto recognized in legislation as a mature and responsible government. We know a strong Toronto means a strong Ontario.”
“This is Toronto's moment," said Mayor David Miller. "The change that Torontonians have been waiting for in their city begins with the new City of Toronto Act. I want to thank Premier McGuinty and Minister Gerretsen for recognizing that it is in all of Ontario's interest for Toronto to be master of its own house,” said Mayor David Miller.
Ministry of Municipal Affairs and Housing and City of Toronto staff began work last September reviewing the city’s legislative framework. The staff report submitted by provincial and city officials follows up on a progress report that was released in May.
