– This 2001 guidebook from CMHC outlines seven steps a municipality should take in developing an affordable housing strategy.
Municipal Planning for Affordable Housing
– This research summary from CMHC provides a brief description of each of six planning and financial tools that can be used to support Affordable Housing and lists some advantages and disadvantages of each. The six tools covered are:
- inclusionary zoning;
- linkage programs;
- density bonusing;
- alternative development standards;
- performance based planning and other flexible
planning approaches; and,
- development cost charges on an area basis.
Affordable Housing Project Viability Assessment
- This interactive tool from CMHC allows a potential developer of affordable housing to assess a proposed affordable housing project and determine the financial requirements to ensure its viability. The tool can be used to assess the viability of a new project or of a conversion.
