The e-guide is a joint project of the Ontario Ministry of Municipal Affairs and Housing (MMAH) and the
Association of Municipalities of Ontario 
(AMO), in cooperation with the
Ontario Municipal Administrators Association (OMAA), the
Association of Municipal Managers, Clerks and Treasurers of Ontario (AMCTO), the
Municipal Finance Officers’ Association of Ontario (MFOA), the
Ontario Good Roads Association (OGRA) and the
Association française des municipalités de l’Ontario (AFMO).
Designed primarily for municipal elected and appointed officials and staff, the e-guide is a living document that covers all of the 18 parts of the Act, with five levels of information from the most general to the most specific:
- What it says
- Background
- Policy and procedure considerations
- Implementation
- Best practices
Levels 1, 2 and 3 are located on the MMAH website, with direct links to levels 4 and 5 on the AMO website. There are links to information and resources on other websites too, including those of municipal associations and other Ontario ministries.
Useful features of the e-guide include a search function by word and section number of the Act, a print function, and direct links to e-laws where the Municipal Act, 2001 and the regulations under it can be viewed.
For the purposes of the e-guide, the Municipal Act, 2001 is also referred to as the “Act”. The previous Act is referred to as the Municipal Act, or as the “old” or “former” Act.
