Effective January 1, 2007, the Municipal Act, 2001 (the Act) has been significantly amended by the Municipal Statute Law Amendment Act, 2006 (Bill 130). Further, there is now a separate municipal statute for Toronto, the City of Toronto Act, 2006.
Please note that although many sections of the Act have been amended or repealed, the Ministry has not yet updated the e-guide. Accordingly, some parts of the e-guide are out-of-date and may contain erroneous information.
For greater accuracy, please refer to the legislation. Information about Bill 130 may be accessed at http://www.ontla.on.ca, and about historic or present versions of the Act or other legislation (as may be available) at http://www.e-laws.gov.on.ca/. Other background is available on the Ministry’s Website at Municipal Act, 2001 Review.
The Ministry plans to revise the e-guide to reflect the Bill 130 changes. |
Welcome to the Municipal Act, 2001 e-guide
The Municipal Act, 2001 took effect on January 1, 2003.
To assist your municipality in working with the act, the Ministry of Municipal Affairs and Housing, in conjunction with the Association of Municipalities of Ontario and several other municipal associations, has developed the following e-guide to the Municipal Act, 2001.
The e-guide explains the legislation and gives practical information on implementing the Municipal Act, 2001.
The following municipal associations contributed to this collaborative effort:
- the Ontario Municipal Administrators Association;
- the Association of Municipal Managers, Clerks and Treasurers of Ontario;
- the Municipal Finance Officers’ Association of Ontario;
- the Ontario Good Roads Association;
- the Francophone Association of Municipalities of Ontario; and
- the Association of Municipalities of Ontario.
