Effective January 1, 2007, the Municipal Act, 2001 (the Act) has been significantly amended by the Municipal Statute Law Amendment Act, 2006 (Bill 130). Further, there is now a separate municipal statute for Toronto, the City of Toronto Act, 2006.
Please note that although many sections of the Act and regulations have been amended or repealed by Bill 130 or other changes, the Ministry has not yet updated the e-guide. Accordingly, some parts of the e-guide are out-of-date and may contain erroneous information.
For greater accuracy, please refer to the legislation. Information about Bill 130 may be accessed at http://www.ontla.on.ca, and about historic or present versions of the Act or other legislation (as may be available) at http://www.e-laws.gov.on.ca/. Other background is available on the Ministry’s Website at Local Government. |
The Ministry of Municipal Affairs and Housing (the Ministry) and the Association of Municipalities of Ontario (AMO) believe that the material in this e-guide may be helpful to municipal users and the public. However, the e-guide deals in summarized fashion with complex matters and reflects legislation - including statutes other than the Municipal Act, 2001 - and practices that are subject to change. Important details may be omitted in the interests of brevity. Municipalities are responsible for making local decisions, including compliance with any applicable statutes or regulations. For these reasons, the e-guide should not be relied upon as a substitute for specialized legal or professional advice in connection with any particular matter. The user is solely responsible for any use or application of the e-guide.
Although the e-guide has been carefully prepared, the Ministry does not accept any legal responsibility for the contents of the e-guide or for any consequences, including direct or indirect liability, arising from its use.
