The Dynamics of the Market and Recommendations for Encouraging Supply
The interim report of the Housing Supply Working Group was presented to the Minister of Municipal Affairs and Housing on Tuesday, May 8th, 2001. The report recommends a number of legislative and administrative changes by federal, provincial and municipal governments which will help to increase the supply of affordable rental housing in Ontario.
The Province is in the process of reviewing and investigating the feasibility of implementing the recommendations of the Working Group. The Ontario government created the joint government-industry-labour Housing Supply Working Group in the fall of 2000. The group is examining barriers to the supply of new rental housing and considering changes to help the private sector build affordable housing.
The Working Group is also looking at affordable home ownership issues, seniors housing and supply related issues associated with other forms of tenure such as life leases. The Working Group commissioned the private consulting firm, Ernst and Young, to study the impact of federal tax measures on investment of new rental housing and the United States.
