Illegal Evictions

Email this page

Only an Enforcement Officer or “Sheriff” can make you leave a rental unit. It is illegal for a landlord to evict a tenant unless an eviction order is issued by the Landlord and Tenant Board .

Your legal rights and responsibilities:

  • if you are a landlord and have a legal reason to evict a tenant under the Act (such as not paying rent or damaging the rental property), you must follow the legal process for eviction.
  • if you need immediate or emergency assistance, call the police. Always keep identification available for proof of your rental unit address.
  • if you are a tenant and you think your landlord has evicted you illegally, seek legal advice and contact the Rental Housing Enforcement Unit for help. Make sure you have the landlord’s contact information (i.e., name, address, telephone number).
  • the Landlord and Tenant Board can help you explore other options. Contact them at 1-888-332-3234 or
