Provisions for Low-Income Households

If you live in a low-income household, you may qualify for the following provisions when submitting a Disaster Recovery Assistance for Ontarians application:

  • Your $500 assistance deductible will be waived.
  • You can apply for assistance for damage caused by a sewer backup, which is not otherwise eligible under the program.

Eligibility

To determine whether your household income falls below the program’s low-income threshold, add together the net income (as shown on line 236 of the Canada Revenue Agency Notice of Assessment) for each adult in the household. You must use the most recent Notice of Assessment available for each adult in the household.

The program’s low-income thresholds are established each year based on 50 per cent of median after-tax household income, as reported by Statistics Canada, adjusted for the number of people living in the household. More information can be found on Statistics Canada’s website.

Example: calculating eligibility

Three adults live in Christine’s household. Based on 2015 Canada Revenue Agency Notices of Assessment, their incomes are:

TOTAL:  $23,233

 

Christine looks at the table above. For a household with three adults using 2016 Notices of Assessment, a net household income lower than $36,509 qualifies for the program’s special provisions. Christine’s net household income is $23,233, so she qualifies for the program’s special provisions.

Required Documentation

If you are eligible for and wish to apply for the provisions for low-income households, you must submit some additional documentation with your Disaster Recovery Assistance for Ontarians application:

  • A completed Application for Special Provisions for Low-Income Households form.
  • A copy of the Canada Revenue Agency’s Notice of Assessment for the most recent tax year for each adult in your household. The program’s low-income thresholds are based on household income, so a Notice of Assessment must be provided for each adult living in the household.
