Ministry of Finance News Release - Property Assessments Frozen

The Ministry of Finance issued a news release announcing that they are cancelling property tax assessments for 2006 and 2007 while MPAC addresses recommendations from the Ombudsman's report of earlier this year.

Municipal Restructuring

The Municipal Act, 2001 defines three types of municipalities:  upper-tier municipalities and lower-tier municipalities within a two-tier municipal system, and single-tier municipalities that are not part of a two-tier system. Since the mid-1990s, as some counties and regional municipalities merged with their constituent local municipalities, as well as the amalgamation of other lower-tier municipalities the number of municipalities, was reduced from 815 to 445.
