Message from the Minister

Minister Jim Watson

Thank you for visiting the webpage for the Residential Tenancies Act, 2006.

The legislation achieves our goal of balanced protection for both landlords and tenants while promoting a healthy investment climate. It also seeks to ensure fairer rents for tenants, help landlords protect their investment and keep our rental housing market strong.

The Residential Tenancies Act, 2006 represents the culmination of a two-year dialogue with the people that this legislation affects the most – tenants and landlords. The Ministry also consulted with housing experts to determine the best way to promote a sustainable, well-maintained supply of rental housing.

The government listened to what these groups had to say about the type of improvements needed to Ontario’s rental housing system. As the new Minister, I have met with several stakeholders and I look forward to continuing to work with these groups to ensure that the rental housing system is fair and balanced.

The Residential Tenancies Act, 2006 represents progress towards building stronger, more prosperous communities across this province.

Jim Watson
Minister
