2008 FONOM/MMAH Conference
The Northeastern Municipal Services Office in partnership with the Federation of Northern Ontario Municipalities (FONOM) recently held another successful annual regional conference in Sault Ste. Marie, May 14-16.
With over 325 delegates from across the Northeast in attendance, the conference commenced with an opening address from National Chief Phil Fontaine from the Assembly of First Nations followed by the keynote address given by Dr. Roberta Bondar – Astronaut, Scientist, Physician, Pioneer who provided the delegates with an inspiring talk entitled “Never A Distance Too Great: Bridges for Life.”
In addition to the keynote speakers, staff from MSO-NE, partner municipalities and field experts presented on various topics such as closed meeting provisions, strengthening aboriginal-municipal relations, and affordable housing success stories in Northeastern Ontario.
On the concluding day of the conference, Minister Jim Watson was joined by Ministers Michael Gravelle, Donna Cansfield, David Caplan, and Parliamentary Assistant Mike Brown for a ministers’ forum where delegates took the opportunity to pose questions on emerging issues in their respective municipalities.
Overall, the conference is being regarded as an overwhelming success with delegates already eager for the 2009 conference to be hosted by the City of Greater Sudbury.
