2009 FONOM/MMAH Conference

The Northeastern Municipal Services Office in partnership with the Federation of Northern Ontario Municipalities (FONOM) recently held another successful annual regional conference in Sudbury, May 6 -8.

The theme for this year’s conference, “Working Together for a Greater Tomorrow”, reflected the ambitious, positive tone of the event, and provided the perfect backdrop for upwards of 250 delegates who were busy sharing ideas and attending presentations. Focused primarily on the challenges and issues facing municipalities in Northeastern Ontario, the agenda included topics related to the forest industry, strengthening municipal / First Nation relations, the Mining Act and planning for new infrastructure, to name but a few.

In addition to the formal sessions, delegates enjoyed activities that fostered networking and sharing of stories. Delegates were shuttled to Dynamic Earth to participate in the various interactive exhibits, and took part in a banquet and the executive awards presentations which followed.

As in past years, the conference ended on a high note with the always popular Minister’s Forum, which this year included Ministers from Natural Resources, Northern Development and Mines, Tourism, and Energy and Infrastructure.

Overall, the conference is being regarded as an overwhelming success with delegates already eager for the 2010 conference to be hosted by the Town of Kapuskasing.
