Township of Central Manitoulin
As we move into summer, we all think of camps and cottages and Central Manitoulin offers all this and more.
The Township of Central Manitoulin offers a diversity of attractions and unique landmarks. Treasure Island is a jewel set in the turquoise waters of Lake Mindemoya. The long sandy beach at Providence Bay with a boardwalk traversing the accompanying sand dunes is a model of tasteful conservation and use of a beach area. At the end of the walk is the new Interpretive Centre, built of the very coral reef limestone that is the backbone of Manitoulin Island. Lake Manitou is the largest and deepest lake on the Island is used year round for activities such as boating, swimming, fishing and snowmobiling. Other lakes include Big Lake, Pine Lake, Martin Lake, Windfall Lake and White Lake. The Mindemoya and Manitou Rivers flow from their respective lakes and find their way to the south shore of Manitoulin Island.
Originally the main industries were farming, forestry and various mills, which over the years have evolved to include tourism as one of the main economic drivers, along with dairy and beef farming and some light manufacturing.
Beside numerous beaches, lakes, and natural wonders, Central Manitoulin is home to Pioneer Museum, which gives visitors an insight into life on Manitoulin Island from initial settlement until the early part of the last century. Since 1884 Central Manitoulin has hosted the Providence Bay Fall Fair during the third week of August, attracting more than 5,000 people. Canada Day week end also attracts many to the Lion’s Club Homecoming Weekend in Mindemoya and the fun filled activities in Providence Bay, both including fire works displays.
This community of over 1900 invites you to visit their enchanting, historic home situated at “ the heart of it all” on beautiful Manitoulin Island.
