City of Elliot Lake
In honour of the City of Elliot Lake’s 50th anniversary this year, the city’s website is our current feature.
As a result of the discovery of a huge uranium ore body in the Cambrian Shield near Elliot Lake, the City was created in 1955. The mines in Elliot Lake produced most of the world’s uranium until the last of the mines ceased operation and closed its doors in 1996. Since that time, the City has developed many successful diversification strategies, among which are the retirement living program that has attracted over 4,000 families from all over Canada, the US and Europe, a treatment centre for substance abuse, a thriving tourism industry and forest products harvesting.
With a stable population now of approximately 12,000, the City offers its residents all the basic amenities found in larger urban centres, including health care, emergency services, transit system, municipal infrastructure and recreation opportunities, all in a safe, clean, affordable and friendly atmosphere.
The boundaries of the City cover 800 square miles and include over 100 spring fed lakes, surrounded by wilderness Crown Land. Tourists and cottagers have visited the Elliot Lake area for years to pursue their passion for outdoor adventure. With more than 4,000 surrounding lakes, the opportunities for fishing and boating are endless. The City also features a brand new championship 18-hole golf course and a special project developing waterfront cottage lots on area lakes. There are also incredible scenic lookouts and vistas for hiking, and a wide variety of trails within the City limits.
We invite you to visit the City of Elliot Lake’s website to discover more about what the website and the City truly have to offer.
